Superset

Superset is all about finding beautiful collections of cards as fast as you can! It comprises 243 cards, and certain collections of cards are called Subsets. A Subset is a collection of three cards where for each attribute, the cards either have that attribute in common or all have different values for that attribute. Each card has five attributes: Background (white, gray, black); Color (cyan, magenta, yellow); Fill (hollow, dashed, solid); Shape (diamond, oval, rectangle); and Number (one, two, three).

The image above shows a spread of Superset cards containing 8 Subsets—see how many you can find!

The game is played by having 18 cards dealt onto the table. All players simultaneously try to find a Subset as fast as they can—when they find one, they declare "Subset!" or "Found one!" or any other house-agreed phrase. At this time, that player indicates which three cards on the table they think make a Subset: if they are correct, they claim those cards for themself and then three new cards are dealt from the deck to replace the ones just taken. Proceed in this manner until the deck is empty and there are no more Subsets—the player with the most claimed cards at the end wins!

If there comes a point in the game when no player believes there is a Subset on the table, 6 extra cards are dealt. Replacement cards are not drawn after a Subset is found unless there are fewer than 18 cards on the table at that time. If there are cards leftover on the table at the end of the game, no one claims them.

If a player declares they have found a Subset and the three cards they indicate do not form a Subset, then they must forfeit one card they previously claimed—this card is removed from the game and will not count toward the player's score at the end of the game. If all players agree, a different amount of cards may be forfeited for incorrectly declaring a Subset; three cards, for instance, would correspond to losing an entire Subset for their mistake.

Players can also play smaller versions of Superset by starting the game with the deck only having cards with some attributes in common. For instance, the game could begin with the deck containing only cards with a white background (one attribute in common), or containing only cards with a white background and a cyan color (two attributes in common). These games are played exactly the same as full Superset except for two details: when there are no Subsets on the table, deal out only 3 cards instead of 6; and instead of having 18 cards typically on the table, there will be fewer cards on the table. Rules changes for the different smaller versions of Superset are summarized here:

  • 0 attritbutes in common: 243 cards in deck, 18 cards on the table, 6 cards drawn when no Subset

  • 1 attritbutes in common: 81 cards in deck, 12 cards on the table, 3 cards drawn when no Subset

  • 2 attritbutes in common: 27 cards in deck, 9 cards on the table, 3 cards drawn when no Subset

  • 3 attritbutes in common: 9 cards in deck, 6 cards on the table, 3 cards drawn when no Subset

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
